Colorado is now out of the ‘deep freeze’ and although still cold compared to most places certainly better than the past couple of weeks.
Early season snow conditions along with the amount of open terrain are the best they have been in years. Keep the snow coming!
Tips for staying warm: now that it’s gotten cold it’s time for tips to stay warm!
Munch – Snacking during the day works (and warms) the body core and when the core is warm more blood flows to extremities, making feet and hands warmer.
Hydrate: if you’re thirsty you’re already getting dehydrated. Dehydration takes away from your body’s ability to stay warmer. Drink water!!
Take a break- especially in the morning when it’s colder taken an inside break to get warm and get the ‘cold edge off’. When you go back out, you’ll last a lot longer.
Chemical hand warmers- put them on the tops of your hands. Buying them away from the ski destination (and in bulk) will save a lot of money. Foot warmers are also available although they can affect a ski boot’s fit. Larger body warmers also work for really cold days.
Don’t overdo socks- bulky socks (or 2 pairs) usually make your feet colder by cutting off circulation. One pair of thin or mid weight non cotton socks work best to keep your feet warm.
Don’t wear cotton- cotton absorbs water (snow/sweat) and doesn’t dry fast, creating a major heat loss.
Wear a hat or helmet- a good chunk of your body heat escapes through your head. Covering it, along with wearing goggles / face mask makes a big different on those cold days.
Layering: layers trap air keeping you warmer, plus take off and add layers as the temperatures change during the day. Outer layer should be waterproof. Mid layer(s) should include neck protection. Light underlayer that can wick moisture away from your body. No Cotton!
If you don’t have good ski clothes Mountain Escapes’ client have access to discounted clothing rental.
