After a great start around Thanksgiving, we had 2.5 weeks of warm and dry weather, and now the big snow has returned. Up to a couple feet at central and northern Colorado on Dec 21st have created some great conditions at many destinations for the Christmas week. Southern areas also received snow but not quite as much. In most winters, it seems like the snow tends to come in 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off pattern. Right now, we’re ‘on’ with more snow predicted later this week.
Fitness Tips to get maximum enjoyment from your ski trip: You’ll be at high elevation (8000’-12000’) with low humidity both of which most folks aren’t used to. Fitness is one of the keys to maximize your enjoyment and help prevent injury. In addition to cardio (running/elliptical/Stairmaster) you also need to strengthen your leg, abdominal, and low back muscles. Many people concentrate on the quads but it’s also important to strengthen hamstrings, calves, and the inner and outer leg muscles to balance the strength of all the leg muscles.
Trip Tip: Avoiding the Weekend and Holiday Crowds: Skiing on the actual holiday (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years) is less busy and most folks leave by early afternoon so stay late! New Years is the exception when skiing early is best since a lot of folks sleep in. For the days surrounding the holiday the best bet is to start early (when the lifts open) or ski late (until the lifts close). Riding during the peak lunch times works too along with avoiding the lifts that the lesson programs use.
