Mountain weather has been varying almost daily between cold blasts and warmer temps. Snow this past week has been widespread. Southern storms have blanketed southern Colorado and New Mexico and even Texas has been in the ‘deep freeze’ causing some travel issues. Overall, ski conditions are very good almost everywhere in Colorado and Northern NM and more snow is in the forecast.
With storms passing through and more coming, it is important for travelers to be concerned about weather conditions, but you shouldn’t panic over potential travel issues before they actually happen. Many times weather issues don’t happen or aren’t nearly as bad as forecasted. In addition, usually you can route around road closures and bad weather with a little advanced planning. Have your vehicles prepared with good tires, chains for vans and busses, extra food, blankets, shovel, flashlight, and sand. Tube sand bags are also helpful for adding some weight in your vehicle for extra traction over the back tires. Driving-wise, smooth starts and stops are critical to not sliding on snowy or icy roads. Allow for extra travel time, take your time and arrive safely. If you’re running late, just let the lodging and ski rental folks at the destination know.
There’s still time to set up a family or group trip this ski season. Excellent snow conditions so far bode well for the rest of the season!
